Catch Indian Ocean LIVE on 28th June, 2012 at Hard Rock Cafe Mumbai, 8,30pm onwards

Indian Ocean, the album, was recorded in Calcutta and, despite the crummy mikes and sozzled sound recordist, the band was on a high. They had recorded an original album, almost entirely instrumental, rare outside the world of Indian classical music. The future looked boundless; anything was possible.

But, much to the band’s frustration, the album took a year to get released. But when it did come out, it sold over 40,000 copies within a year of its release – at that time, the highest selling record by any Indian band ever. However, this had no immediate results – in concerts, contracts or money or anything.

Times Music signed on Indian Ocean in 1998 and, the next year, the band went to Mumbai to record a new album. Recorded in the hi-tech studio Western Outdoor, and released in March 2000, Kandisa went on to acquire cult status, becoming one of the most important, best-loved albums of contemporary Indian music.

The band became a keenly awaited presence on the college circuit, with repeat invites from big cities and smaller towns all around the country. The international scene opened up dramatically. From their first concert abroad in London in August 2001, they went on to play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where they played 18 concerts in 14 days, and were nominated the Pick of the Fringe. They returned to the Fringe in 2002 and 2003. In 2002, the band played 37 concerts abroad across four continents: New Zealand, USA, UK, Japan, Australia and Indonesia, and the next year they toured the UK twice, returned to the Australia, went to Germany and then on to Singapore. In 2004 they flew across the ‘actual’ Indian Ocean, to play on the gorgeous island of Reunion. The next year, they toured the UK three times. Their high point was performing at Trafalgar Square in the heart of London, playing two concerts heard by an audience of thousands. And in 2005-06, they toured the US thrice, playing 26 concerts across thirteen states, and one in Toronto, Canada. Today, as their much-stamped passports attest, they are India’s leading global band.

Growing recognition has brought Indian Ocean in touch with some of the greatest musicians in the world. Susmit, Amit and Rahul played with the celebrated violinist Pandit L. Subramaniam. Then, Asheem accompanied the legendary American folk singer Pete Seeger in a packed performance. The whole band jammed with the virtuoso Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino in Delhi, and played with top jazz musicians during their Japanese tour in 2002. A year later, Rahul and Amit felt privileged to play with Vikoo Vinayakram and his son Selva Ganesh at a percussion concert in Almora. In 2002, on hearing Indian Ocean play in Washington DC, the great cellist Yo-Yo Ma complimented them for doing to Indian music what he had always wanted to do with Chinese music.

Indian Ocean’s fourth album Jhini was released in 2003, along with the band’s first music video for the title track. The band was nominated as MTV’s Artists of the Month. The album also won the AVMax Award for the best produced album of 2003.

Tragically though, Indian Ocean lost one of their founder members in December 2009. The band continues to perform and compose, and have taken the help of several friends and musicians to fill in for Asheem.

'Cobbled Street and October' perform live in Hard Rock Cafe New Delhi on Thursday, 28th June!

" A musical Hybrid of Modern Rock Genres "

Germinating in 2007, October is a musical hybrid of the modern genres of alternative and progressive rock layered with psychedelia, expressed through the collective musical meeting ground of its six members –
1.    Shantanu ‘Shanty’ Sudarshan – Drums
2.    Jeffrey Laloo – Bass, Backing Vocals
3.    Rohan Panjiar – Guitars
4.    Shashvat Pandit – Guitars
5.    Amitabh Mukherjee – Vocals

We consider narrowing a band down to a genre as musical racism; therefore we strive to combine anything and everything that cools our beans. A completely secular musical orgy if you will, with its members bringing their unique musical influences to create a sound reflective of the band’s gritty and stark look at its surroundings. We almost completely always believe in playing our original compositions with no regard to the number of cries of 'smoke on the water'. The reason why we named our band 'October' is a well kept secret within the band, and we do not wish to divulge it any time soon. Talk to our mascot (gopi) for details.

Venues rocked by us include – Turquoise Cottage, Café Morrison, Café Chinese and Thai, Mocha Bar, Rock in Rio(Chandigarh), Orca Lounge(Jaipur), Not Just Jazz By the Bay(Mumbai), 10 Downing (Hyderabad), 1 Lounge (Pune), Firangi Paani(Mumbai), Someplace Else(Kolkata).

October was declared Runners up at IIT Kanpur 2008 Synchronicity, 3rd place at BITS Pilani 2009 and has taken part in several other competitions such as IIT Mumbai Mood Indigo as well as played in college festivals at Miranda House, JMC and DCAC.

October released its debut album-Defeat the Question on 19thDec, 2010 at GIR, Delhi where we opened for Meshuggah, Undying Inc and Lucid Recess.

'Solder' perform live in Hard Rock Cafe Bengaluru on Thursday, 28th June!

Solder is a Bangalore based band which was born with the intent of writing feel good songs, and belting them out “Live and Loud.”

The Indian sub-continent over the past decade has been nestling an independent music scene, and in 2009 Bangalore gave us SOLDER. Siddarth Abraham, Mark Escottee, Akhilesh Kumar, Joel Rozario and Samson Phillip got together by forces which they now like to call destiny, and started making music almost randomly, and Bangalore saw a band that played their music “Live and Loud” and contributing their two bits to the independent music movement on India.

With a line-up at equilibrium and a defined sound, the gigs and the competitions (runners up Strawberry Fields 2009, Bangalore Winners of Yamaha Asian Beats 2010, Bangalore Winners of Channel V Launchpad 2011) kept coming and with it Solder developed a reputation of being electric, energetic and fun on stage. The Solder show is like one big party, completely informal, with the feel good vibe, bringing the house down with funk, soul, rock and twenty-something energy. And with this passion for music and their ability to connect with their audiences, Solder started winning over fans at every gig they’ve played, and made audiences feel the vibe that they call “Live and Loud”!!

Often described as a unit of five drifters glued together by music, Solder was born with the intent of writing feel good songs, and belting them out “Live and Loud”. Their story started when two friends Mark Escottee and Joel Rozario, who then just disbanded a funk project they were part of, got together over a few drinks (or maybe a few more) and started talking about their music, and the need to start a new music project, which was to be later known to the world as Solder. They were joined by Akhilesh Kumar, a friend from University. Then one day Akhilesh got with him his kickboxing instructor Siddarth Abraham who had fronted a few bands that had their roots in classic rock to the jam room and Sid belted out whatever was written till then in his voice, the voice was awesome, the chemistry was super, and all systems were go, but they still lacked the low end or more commonly called the bass section. This was soon solved when Joel saw Samson Phillip at a local gig and invited him over to the jam room, when he came by we got our very own agent of funk and the line-up was complete. And might we add, PERFECT.

Now with all the varied influences bouncing off each other, Solder slowly created a sound space underlined by groove and layered with vocal melodies and harmonies, accompanied by screaming guitar licks and reverb laden drum sounds.

With their debut album in the pipeline, SOLDER will try and re-create the “Live and Loud” vibe on record, and when it does release we can all play it on loop and smile, and make the world a happy place.

Rock To Retro on Friday, 22nd June!

Rock to Retro at Hard Rock Cafe Hyderabad on Friday, 22nd June! Move your feet to Retro as our DJ spins the show!!

Retro, during the 1990s, referred to a new genre of music, particularly dance music, popular in the U.S. at the time and originally termed New Wave music which was in part an outgrowth of the Punk rock genre of the late 1970s and early 1980s and Psychedelic genre of the late 1960s. Many of the songs and albums termed retro at the time came about during great advancement in the development of generating music electronically (that is, with computers and electronic equipment - or Electronic music - rather than with either traditional or electromechanical instruments) and the popularization of this type of music in the mainstream. Ideas as to how broad and inclusive the Retro category of music is varied; nonetheless, not all music - not even all dance music - from the decade of the 1990s were considered Retro music. Now, in fact, retro music refers only to music that came out of the retro era.

A journey that began back at the end of 2009, but is nowhere near coming to an end, One Nite Stand are growing in stature with each passing day. Known for their lively and energetic performances, this is a band that is now recognized as one of Bangalore’s most touted young bands.

Depending on the venue and requirements, their shows cover a variety of genres ranging from Soft Rock to Rock n’ Roll, throwing in some Reggae mixed with a little Contemporary and some Retro, a touch of Blues, a shout of Pop and even a bit of some thumping Disco! The crowd and fan following that they have slowly but steadily built up over the years is also widely varied, with people being anything between 16 and 70 years, and the after-effect of most shows is usually a number of encores, resulting in a One Night Stand that's totally worth it.

Known to bring an original twist into each track, the band never fails to surprise an audience and ensures that they stay hooked right through the show!

After having a good amount of experience and a good number of shows under their belt, the guys from Bangalore are always looking to push for more! Besides the club shows around the country, the band is always looking to perform at parties, events, pre / post wedding parties, etc and are slowly building up a good reputation for this as well. Companies such the UB Group, Kingfisher, Black Dog, Red Bull, Jameson’s Whiskey, Absolut Vodka and Pearls to name a few.

One Nite Stand has become the popular choice to headline college festivals, particularly those which have a strong female attendance. The band recently headlined the Mount Carmel Girls’ College Festival – Cul Ah 2012, which was attended by thousands of screaming female fans - A definite sign of the band’s growing popularity with female audiences across the country.

Despite being primarily a cover band, One Nite Stand has become the first Indian band to have caught the attention of a leading record label from the United States and are now looking to take things a step further. The band is now in the process of recording their debut album, which will include some songs written and composed by the band itself. The aim is to get an even better response for this album and hopefully one day in the near future, push on to the International level. So grab those tight clothes, put on your make-up, grab a few beers and head down for our show. Because if you look hard enough, the 80s never died...the decade only lay dormant somewhere deep within you. And now, the beast begins to rise again! Rock or die!
