After years of individually playing in other outfits and setups, The Pulp Society has finally come together to add a little skanky funk to the burgeoning indie Indian music scene. With their complicated and messed up (read: varied) roots as a huge strength, they tackle material that is irreverent, sexy, disrespectful and always very groovy. How do you try and control a complicated country with dozens of languages and weird situations? Answer: you don’t. You just dance and celebrate the complications! The only sensible thing left to do in this scene with people judging and mudslinging each other, is to dance baby! And make people dance. Expect some jazz coloured mode playing, some funky pockets, virtuoso instrumentation, and tongue in cheek lyrics that have no respect for genre and culture divisions.
The Society itself:
Imaad Shah: Songwriter and Agent provocateur.
Jonathan James Paul: Piano and organ player, Smooth fingers! Mr. keys himself.
Anand Bhagat: Percussionist and provider of all manner of strange and beautiful percussion instruments. From congas morchans djembes to beer bottles and whistles.
Debjyoti Saha: THE Drummer. Seriously groovy.
Dusty Ryan: Steady backbone, old school disco loving bassist and yogi.
Lokesh Bakshi: Guitarist, part time scientist, full time scenester.

Pralayh formed in the end of December 2008, is a group of individuals with different views having a common goal, to make good original inspiring music in Hindi. Having no such intention to stick to one particular genre of music has given them the flexibility to write songs which are layered such as ‘Mere Yaar’ to the more straight forward garage rocker, ‘The Mamu Song’.
The common factor in all the songs being the melody which is the strong point of the band’s compositions. With the members of the band influenced by various kinds of music such as heavy metal, alternative, punk, post punk n pop, the resulting music is varied but can be classified broadly under Rock n Roll. Lyrically the songs deal with girls, relationships, life and life. With some songs having more weightage on the words used and others giving more importance to the meaning.
Speaking of issues and feelings that everyone goes through at some point in their life Pralayh has managed to connect with the audience and give voice to their thought. With such strong songs and belief in each others ability, it is easy for Pralayh to play confidently onstage which has led them to be respected as one of the tightest and energetic live bands. With 11 originals (and more in the making) they can easily occupy the stage for 75 mins, throw in a few covers and they can fill your evening with 2 hours of rock n roll. 9 songs have been recorded at Clays Home Studio.
Pralayh is:
Reuben Dayal - Vocals/Guitars
Mohammed Shahid - Guitars/Backing Vocals
Dibyendu Mahanta – Guitars/Backing Vocals
Kevin - Bass
Arnab Roy - Drums
Uday Man Lama - Manager

Advaita is an eclectic fusion band based in New Delhi, India. As their name suggests (an ancient Indian philosophy meaning Non (A) Dual (Dvai), the band has a spiritual dimension, which runs through their work. The members of this outfit come from all kinds of musical backgrounds from rock to Indian classical. Their brand of contemporary ‘organic’ fusion has however, been hailed as one of the most original and creative sounds to ever come out of the Indian underground music scene. No where else can one hear a sarangi, tabla and Hindustani Classical vocalist blend so effortlessly, yet so exotically with guitars, drums and keyboards. Added to this brew are electronic soundscapes, which give their music a new age global context.
Since their inception in 2004, Advaita has been steadily establishing themselves as one of the most exciting and original acts on the Indian music scene, with the unique reputation of being at home in any kind of setting – from pub gigs and college shows to corporate evenings and Classical festivals, the band has done it all! Hailed by music lovers and media alike, the band is now a well established entity on the cultural map of Delhi In January 2006, some members of the band played on stage with international superstar Talvin Singh. Later in the year, Advaita received a lot of attention as the in house band featured weekly on NDTV’s talk show Face the Music hosted by Vir Sanghvi. November 2007 was another big month for the band as they were asked to inaugurate the ‘Saarc bands festival’, featuring the best bands from all the Saarc countries. The diverse repertoire of the band has also seen them perform at high profile corporate evenings for clients like The Taj group, Vodafone, the Times of India and HCL amongst others. Appreciation from the classical community resulted in their presence at the Gwalior Heritage Festival (where they performed just before Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan on the same stage) and the Prachisudha Festival organised by famous dancers Raja Radha Reddy. Advaita was one of only four bands from India selected by famous producer John Leckie (who has worked with the likes of Pink Floyd, George Harrison and Radiohead) to record two songs with him for a compilation released by the British council. As part of this project, called the India Soundpad Project, the band recently toured the UK playing 6 shows in 5 cities, including the famous Great Escape Festival in Brighton.
In March 2009 Advaita launched its first album on EMI records titled Grounded In Space and this has further catapulted the status of the band. Recorded at the famed Yash Raj studios, Mumbai, the album spent 4 weeks at number one on the International charts at the Music World stores for all of Delhi, ahead of releases by international superstars like U2. The coming season will see the band do a nation wide tour to promote the album and the video for the opening track Rasiya will be seen on music channels very soon.

Over the years the Indian sub continent has been brewing quiet a few underground rock bands, and in the summer of 2005 Chennai gave us Junkyard Groove.
Ameeth Thomas, Siddharth Srinivasan and Craig Maxworth got together almost randomly and realized that they had something to contribute to the world of Indian Rock and Roll. Ameeth started of his music career fronting a few other bands before Junkyard Groove, as was the same with the other guys. Siddharth the youngest of the lot played with bands that found there roots in classic and funk rock covers. Craig entered the music scene with a band that was pretty much a ‘Rage Against The Machine’ tribute band. Maybe your reading this to find out more about Junkyard Groove. Or maybe you already know what ever you need to know about them, from Myspace and Facebook. Maybe you’ve seen them live at a few local rock competitions. Maybe you’ve seen them win every one of them. Maybe you’ve jumped around to their music at shows like ‘Rock In India’, ‘Channel V Launch PAD’, ‘Strawberry Fields’… etc Maybe you got a little to drunk and passed out before they finished their set. Maybe you heard of them when they opened for the Dubai Desert Rock Festival. Or maybe you just came over to watch Iron Maiden and Incubus. Maybe you’ve listened to their music online and liked it. Maybe you hated it. Maybe you’re sick and tired of waiting for their album to come out. Or maybe you felt better when you heard that the new GNR album might beat them to it.
With their fourth birthday around the corner Junkyard Groove is going through a lot of difficult negotiations to get their Album out. The Music is good but the Music Industry is not such a pretty picture after all. But never the less the album would be out eventually, and we would all go back home with smiles on our faces. Who knows maybe they’d be in your city next weekend, and maybe there just might be a lot of alcohol around, and maybe you just might pass out before they finish their set. If that happens this has been a brief overview of the madness that is Junkyard Groove.

Faridkot We call it Confused Pop. Why "Confused"? We hope someone can help us solve that riddle soon. But we'll help you out with what got till now... The confusion mostly comes in once you hear a mix of pop vocals, bluesy guitar playing, funk bass lines, melodic (and sometimes pompous) electronic layers flavoured with a pinch of jazz-based drums all combined together in a heap of musical endeavours that we like to call our own. Sometimes in love, sometimes trying to be funny and a little more loving (we're a bit unlucky in that sphere); we just like to play good music which might transcend the individual inspirations that each musician brings forth.

When the Traveling Rivers woke up one morning from their unsettling dreams, they refused to find themselves changed into a monstrous vermin. And of the desire to sound out their refusal, this strange looking band, half-men-half-vermin, weird but wonderful started making their music. With their distinctive hybrid of folk, blues, introspection, jazz and all the genuine, honest music of the universe, the riverine band remains in a constant state of flux, plunging their eager proboscis everywhere, genre after genre, artist after artist, experience after experience, into the vast unknown recesses of the internet and the illegal. Still in their nascent days, the band holds tremendous promise, takes its music seriously, and takes the serious musically. All because the Jewish cowboy who has something to say about everything once said, 'To live outside the law, you must be honest.'
For the Traveling Rivers, divinity comes in the different shapes and the different sounds of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Nick Drake, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, The Velvet Underground, Billie Holiday and The Beatles.

PCRC has a strange history and actually consists of two lineups. One back in San Francisco, CA where it started with Suryakant Sawhney and the current one based in Delhi but that isn’t important. Its influences are an eclectic mix ranging from 50s crooners like Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke to bands often hard to stand like the Velvet Underground and Neutral Milk Hotel. The music from the golden age of Bollywood has a gigantic influence, especially the Burmans. We employ multiple instruments to get the sounds with one guy often playing 2 instruments in 1 song. Lyrically speaking, we are quite open to profanities and the tone is cheeky, sarcastic, surreal and often very dark with song names like Don’t Rape my Baby and the Clown on the 22nd Floor.
We’ve often been said to be like a modern version of the Kinks which we take as quite the compliment even though ironically we’ve spent maybe 20 mins of our lives listening to them. An important part of our music is the process of recording which is done by us without any studio usage. This era has ushered in cheap recording equipment which if used properly can still produce something lovely and we are currently working on our full length debut album which we expect to be done within the next month. Watching PCRC live is an experience which makes you want to dance, scream, and fight at times and by the end just grin like a jackass.
Cyanide
The band was formed in 2002 while each of its members were still in school. Over the years as they progressed through school and college competitions and evolving line-ups, they managed to develop a decent fan base. After playing numerous shows in many different venues, their original music started to become quite popular amongst their audience. As the band is known for it’s foot-tapping guitar riffs and melodic pop choruses, the word of their music began to spread.
In 2007, they were one of the 4 finalists in Channel [V]Launchpad, where they played in front a crowd of almost 10,000. Ever since then, they played at numerous prestigious music festivals such as “The Eastwind Festival” and “The Great Indian Rock Festival”. In the summer of 2008, they played a country wide tour where they played in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Simla ... to name a few.
Earlier this year, they signed with 44G Records and released an EP (Exptended Play) titled “Not over yet” in the month of April, which is being downloaded through out the country and has managed to maintain the band’s No.1 position on the “Reverbnation Charts” As of now, they working on a full scale album, which will be released later this year on the same record label.

AlterEgoz was formed in the year 2001 although the members of the band have been playing since the mid 90s. AlterEgoz’s influences are the Beatles, Jethrotull, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Yes, The Who, Police,....... and many more great bands and individuals.
It’s not possible to name all of them. Originally all the 6 compositions have been made to English Lyrics. Due to a possibility of a few of them threatened to be used for films, we have made them bi-lingual. Songs like Conscious – Shakti, Belly – Naya Naseeb are in English as well as Hindi. All our OCs are immensely appreciated by our audiences and Shakti and Naya Naseeb are popular due to their strong lyrical content – Shakti being on Women and Naya Naseeb on Child Labour.
While we have performed at many places, our most memorable performances have been at the Passport pub and The Under Deck at the Taj as we have done many a theme events here – like the Pink and Black show( Floyd and Sabbath), Jail House Rock, Glam Rock era etc. Big events have been the ones we did at the Marriott for New Year’s eve in 2008 and 2009, Infosys campus event, Ascendas Corporate event, Airtel Live in 2007 where we played along with some big names like Soul Mate, Skinny Alley, Mrigya, Parikrama etc. AlterEgoz have been playing regularly at HRC Hyderabad.

In sync with the freedom, passion and self-expression, that define Harley-Davidson; Split, a promising rock band has been selected to kick-start the Harley Rock Riders tour from 9th September to 4th December. Nikhil is a guitarist/singer-songwriter from Mumbai. The genre might be loosely defined as eclectic acoustic guitar-based pop/alternative with folk influences.
The band setup is currently Nikhil D’souza (guitar/vocals), Vinay Lobo (guitar), Gaurav Gupta (Bass/vocals) and Vinayak Pol (Drums). The music has a full melodic quality to it mainly due to the use of alternative tunings, favored by such artists as Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, on most of the tracks. His main influences have been Sting, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Damien Rice besides several others.
To quote Nikhil from his myspace page, “Started out playing guitar at the age of 12, or was it 13?.. doesn’t matter. But I remember I started playing because there was no one else to play while I sang. So it’s been 12 years of being in bands as guitarist, mainly, rarely sometimes doing what I like doing best: SING. And then, I gave it up... for a mundane working life, defined by a 9-to-5 existence, working in various geology-related jobs. Three years later, I don’t quite know what made me change my views about the way I should live the rest of my life—to get back into the music—but I know it happened... and this time, I’m not turning back. Good music is made from a lot of genuine feeling, and if u have the gift to make your audience feel what you’re feeling, then you’re nearly there. I’d like to believe I have that ability.”

The Works was formed when Mihir decided to put together a good old fashioned rock 'n' roll band. He met up with Shannon, whom he had seen before with another band and asked him if he'd like to join him in forming a new band. Shannon agreed and soon Hansel, Shannon's childhood friend joined in on drums. Partho came along next on the rhythm and lead guitar and the last person to join was Michael who stepped in on bass to complete the band.
One of the things that makes The Works stand apart is that they are totally open minded about the music that they play. Just seeing the bands they cover should give you an idea of what this implies. They take on ACDC, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Buddy Guy, Deep Purple, The Doors, Eagles, Elvis, Guns n Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Rolling Stones, U2, ZZ Top and more!
Their originals reflect their myriad influences and their songs are basically saying that "Rock 'n' roll is still alive and kicking ass!" They got together on the 13th of August 2007 and since then have gone on play over 60 shows since then!

The Ether Descends..
What:
Don’t bail out… yet! With Parachute XVI one never knows what's coming next. Soaring ballads, crunchy rock’n’roll riffs, adventures in time signatures, ‘progadelia’, or just flat out improvisation; Parachute XVI seamlessly mould themselves into a musical organism with each member adding layers to the song which results in a sound that can truly be called their own.
Who:
Steeped in the blues tradition of guitar playing, Ananth Menon marries his conventional delta-influenced style with a modern psychedelic approach lending a traditional, yet timeless sound to Parachute XVI’s sound. Ganesh Krishnaswamy might be best known as a bass player, but, has been intensely involved with creating new sounds and styles of music ever since his metal-head days and his openness to all things musical, married with an uncanny sense of rhythm, allows him unfettered freedom, to create, groove, and frolic in the musical universe. Coming from a strong experimental and post-rock background, former His Girl Friday and Fangle Dangle & the Skoogle Skangle [Glasgow] drummer Gurudarshan Somayaji brings his neurotic brand of insanity into the band. Rahul Ranganath, the most recent addition to the band is the second guitarist and an all-round sonic wizard whose modern approach to sound and song writing first found fruition in his other project, The Bicycle Days. His contribution to PXVI’s sound is invaluable in taking the band’s sound to uncharted territory.
Why:
Parachute XVI’s debut EP release Sodium Trail and the Current Beantown Voice, recorded at Acoustic Garden in Bangalore showcased the band’s psychedelic rock influences and met critical acclaim for its forward thinking. This is no hobby for Parachute XVI, and nothing is done in half measure as the band obsessively think of ways of taking their music and their band to the next level. Welcome to the ether!

The Circus as a band came together in the year 2007, when Arsh Sharma and Anshul Lall formed the first lineup of the band. Once Abhinav Chaudhary came in on bass and Abhishek Bhatia came in on vocals the line up was complete. Since then the band has constantly been touring and performing all over the country, and have released their debut full-length album, From Space. Funky. Groovy. Eclectic. Vicious. Happy. Mellow. Furious. Quirky. Angsty. Bouncy.
Think of a musical recipe which has a healthy dollop of all these ingredients and you’re thinking The Circus. A band that believes in ferocity of intent and perfection of execution, and an absolutely take-no-prisoners attitude when it comes to their original music. The eldritch, beaming wails of Abhishek Bhatia, theleft-field pummeling guitar attack of Arsh Sharma, the ridiculously complex bass work of Abhinav Chaudhary and the tireless groove machine of Anshul Lall put together create some of the most refreshing and original music to emerge out of the Indian subcontinent in years.
Live, they are the essence of what rock and roll is all about, and bring the fun and decadence that has all but died out in a scene where bands sound increasingly manufactured in an attempt to be appreciated. The Circus are none of that. You would be wise to show up at the next gig.

Formed in 2002, Barefaced Liar is an amalgamation of the distinct and eclectic musical taste of its members, Akshay Chowdhry (Vocals, Guitars), Sumant Balakrishnan (Guitars, Vocals) and Dushyant Purohit (Bass) .
The band is heavily influenced by all time classic sounds of bands and artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, SRV, Hendrix and Metallica while leaning towards a more modern sound in the style of Tool, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.
Based out of a country and culture that is still embracing the concept of rock ‘n roll and live music , BFL has worked passionately on honing their craft in terms of combining technical skill and quality songwriting and believe that their hard work is ready to be recognized on a global scale. The combination of influences backed by a loaded blues rock driven guitar style that developed over the years, led to a unique east-west dynamic that has translated into complete and relevant songwriting.
Over the past few years, the band has done dozens of studio sessions that have yielded positive results. Two of their tracks 'Glow' and 'Mirage', have received International acclaim as 'Semi Finalists' from the UK Songwriters Contest for 2009 and 2010 respectively. The band has recently recorded their debut album with producer Zorran Mendonsa and are looking forward to releasing it in November 2010. With a twin guitar offensive, haunting basslines and thumping rhythms, Barefaced Liar is all set to impress….
