Something Relevant is a Mumbai-based jam band. The band consists of an eclectic ensemble that includes a saxophonist, a percussionist and a classical pianist.
Members of the band are all from Mumbai but are from very different backgrounds. Their one common ground being their music. Being friends before musicians, their unique chemistry manifests itself in the music and on stage. They have evolved over the years into a motley ensemble that thrives on being orginal.
Something Relevant has a varied set; from performing songs from their upcoming album “Feels good to be Live”, that has a distinct sound and flavor. Where the lyrics are drawn from personal experiences., & the music draws inspiration from all over the world, & their biggest influence is their city - Bombay.
STR as they are popularly known is a big fan of the likes of, The Dave Matthews Band, Jamie Cullum, The Beatles, The Cat Empire, Tower of Power, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Manu Chao, Bob-Marley, Richard Bona, Maceo Parker and Miles Davis. If there was a sound that STR would be partial to it would have to be Funk.
The band has an arsenal of styles and is constantly on the look out for what is hip. They often rehash ‘Bollywood’ classics from the golden era (1950-1979) with jazzy and big band arrangements. Bringing back the old school vibe! Having listened to all the old hits, Indian folk songs & Jazz standards’, Something Relevant always manages to stay connected to larger audiences.
Playing For Change
Something Relevant believes that music is a powerful tool for education and awareness and takes time out for a variety of important social causes. From creating greater awareness of the Eco-system and tree plantings to fund raisers for flood relief and higher education. STR is concerned about our planet.
A few of our endeavors include
• The ‘Batti Bandh’ campaign for ethical and non-wasteful use of electricity.
• The GAIA campaign to protect the forest land in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai.
• STR supports the Women Graduates Union, in their endeavors to raise funds for higher
education for underprivileged women in India.
• STR has even protested in song at Gateway of India for the ‘International Violence Against
Women’ Day, at a rally organized by women’s rights activist Dr. Nandini Sardesai,
• Raised funds for the Bihar flood relief, through the ‘Rock On for Humanity’ concert
organized by some of India’s famous movie stars.
• And supported the concept of One Sky One World with the ‘Kites for Peace festival’,
which promoted harmony by collective kite flying.
STR also endorses a very special and personal cause - that of the revival of ‘The Bandstand Culture’ in Mumbai. The tradition was started in 1880, when brass bands from the police and armed forces would play at the various ‘bandstands’ in Mumbai - at Cooperage, Parsi Colony, Bandra, Horniman Circle, Jijamata Udhyan, Byculla etc.
The last great concert was in 1947 at Apollo Bunder, to mark the departure of the British from India, though the older generation remembers the bands performing at the Cooperage when they were younger. STR performed at various bandstands in Mumbai throughout 2007-2008 and was honoured by the Ministry of Tourism in India and the Bombay Chamber of Commerce for their involvement in the campaign.
